  • Information
  • Dutch Large Flowering Crocus
Also referred to as Giant Dutch Crocus or The Wild Crocus of the Alps, bee-loved Dutch Large Flowering Crocus bloom about two weeks later than Species or Botanical Crocus, and date back to 1875. They have graceful six-petaled, 5" tall flowers that open and close on sunny days, and grass-like foliage with narrow, median silver-white stripes. Deer-resistant, Large Flowering Crocus naturalize readily in well-draining soil and in full to partial sunlight. They naturalize by corm (bulb) offsets that are the baby corms on the sides of the originally planted, mother corm and sometimes, when mature and happy over time, by self-sowing seed. They are best planted in garden and pathside borders where their foliage is allowed to thrive and die back without being mowed prematurely. While Species Crocus are normally recommended for lawn planting, Dutch Large Flowering Crocus may also be planted in lawns as long as the foliage is allowed to thrive and die back naturally before lawn mowing begins. Prolonged photosynthesis helps nourish and grow the corms for naturalizing and future years of blooms. The foliage usually dies back in five weeks or so. Crocus lawn tapestries do best in dappled sunlight under deciduous trees where grass is less dense and Crocus corms will not be choked out by thick grass roots. You’ll need about nine corms per square foot for a dense planting. Square footage is determined multiplying the planting site’s length times its width. Bulb size: 9 cm/up. Full to partial sunlight. Bloom time in horticultural zone 5: April. Plant 5" deep and 4" apart. HZ: 4-8. Height: 5".
