Scilla - Hyacinthoides
Naturalizing readily for years of spectacular color, Scilla and Hyacinthoides thrive in rockgardens, woodland areas, border plantings and in perennial beds. Also known as Wood Squill (Scilla) and bluebells (Hyacinthoides), they are prized for their naturalizing capabilities. Scilla are also known to be good for indoor forcing. Hyacinthoides used to be classified as Scilla or Endymion and are taller than Scilla with pendant, bell-shaped flowers. Top size bulbs. Height: 4" to 18" depending on the variety. Bloom time: variable, early Spring through June depending on the variety. Scilla: plant 5" deep and 4" to 6" apart, Hyacinthoides: plant 4" deep and 4" apart. Horticultural zones 3-8 (except for Hyacinthoides non-scripta which is good from horticultural zones 5-7).
