Eremurus

Also known as "Desert Candles" or "Foxtail Lilies", these graceful spires of dense flowers are one of the most spectacular, early-summer flowering blooms. These tall willowy spires are comprised of densely-packed flowers that open progressively from the bottom of each spike up, with a sparse, ground-level rosette of long strappy leaves. Preferring rich, well-draining soil with bright sunlight and protection from wind, these woody, tuberous rootstocks should be planted upon receipt 36” apart (never overcrowd) and covered with just 2” to 3” of soil. Eremurus dry out a bit after harvest and rehydrate once planted. Loosen the soil at each individual planting site and gently place each brittle, spidery rootstock with its pointed crown facing up~do your best to avoid rootstock breakage. In marginal micro climates, apply a good layer of mulch after the top of the ground freezes to protect them from arctic winter temperature spiking and early spring frosts. Top size, tuberous rootstocks. Bloom time: May/June. Height: 3' to 6'. HZ: 5-8.
