Royal Dutch Hybrid Miniature Amaryllis
Also known as Hippeastrum, these magnificent, exotic bulbs usually have two stems with each producing four, huge, trumpet-like flowers. Although there are no guarantees from Mother Nature, our Dutch Amaryllis usually flower in eight to twelve weeks once potted (if you want Amaryllis to bloom for Christmas, choose from among our Christmas Flowering Amaryllis). The Double and Miniature varieties may pop out of dormancy a bit sooner than the Single varieties.
Horticultural Note:
Prior to potting, store the bulbs at a dry 50°F with good ventilation and moderate humidity at about 65% to keep roots pliable and healthy. They are best planted from October through February. Plant each bulb in a cozy pot (about 1” between the bulb and the pot) with 25% of the bulb above soil level to prevent water from collecting in the bulb sprout. Use a well-draining, neutral pH, sterile potting soil. Firmly tamp down the soil and give the bulb a good drink of tepid water. Do not water again until green growth appears: early over watering inhibits root growth. Place the pot in direct sunlight at room temperature for optimum root, height and color development. If the bulb is slow to wake out of dormancy, apply bottom heat with a seed growing mat, heating pad or food warming tray. Once it starts to grow, water regularly like a normal houseplant. Never mist or use overhead irrigation. Sword-like foliage may appear before, during or after flowering.
Amaryllis bulbs are sized at harvest by measuring the bulb’s circumference. After harvest, they shrink as they dry and their outer skins may become reddish-brown or shriveled.
